Are these aircraft IFR-legal? What kind of avionics do they have?
Yes, the aircraft are IFR-legal. Instrumentation provided is listed in the aircraft descriptions.
How many seats does it have?
The Irish Air Corps aircraft are 3-place, consisting of pilot and copilot seats and a back seat for one passenger. The Italian Air Force airplanes are configured as two-seaters, with IAF avionics in the back. Although we have not done yet done so, the avionics in the Italian AF airplanes could be reloctaed and a back seat could be installed, similar to that in the IAC and civilian SF-260's.
Can I get parts?
Yes. The SF-260 is still in production, and you can get parts from the manufacturer, Aermacchi, through Airpower International. We also have a large inventory of parts in stock.
Are these aircraft certifiable in Standard or Experimental category?
For now, all of these aircraft must be certified as Experimental / Exhibition.
What are the restrictions on experimental?
Experimental aircraft cannot be used to carry persons or property for hire. Other than that, there are very few restrictions. In particular, the 300-mile "Proficiency Area" flight limitation that we've lived with for years, defined in FAA Order 8130.2F, has recently been lifted. This is a MAJOR breakthrough for Experimental Exhibition aircraft, due in large part to the great work of the EAA and the Warbirds of America (WOA). You can read about it here.
How have they been maintained?
These aircraft have been meticulously maintained by the Italian Air Force and the Irish Air Corps, including, within the past 1500 flight hours, an IRAN (inspect and replace as necessary) inspection consisting of a complete tear-down of the aircraft.
Is there any warranty?
Airpower International warrants that the aircraft are airworthy with all systems in working condition at time of delivery.
What type of logbook endorsement do I need?
Since the SF-260 meets the definition of a "complex" and a "high performance" aircraft, per FAR 61.31(e), you'll need one-time endorsements in your logbook certifying you are proficient to operate complex and high-performance airplanes. These endorsements are not required if you have logged pilot in command flight time in a complex and high performance airplane, or in a flight simulator or flight training device that is representative of a complex and high performance airplane, prior to August 4, 1997.
Is there sales tax?
No, but aircraft sold for use in California are subject to a "Use Tax," which is tantamount to the same thing. A FAQ related to CA Use Tax can be found here: http://www.boe.ca.gov/sutax/faqtrans.htm#d. If you intend to base the airplane in California, we're obligated by the BOE to collect the Use Tax on their behalf at the time of sale. If, on the other hand, you intend to base it outside of California, we do not.
